Trainer Profile : Dale Romans
Dale Romans developed from a Kentucky backstretch horseman into an Eclipse Award winner with major victories in the Preakness, Dubai World Cup, Travers, and Breeders’ Cup. His active-career totals must be dated, and his reputation should not be converted into an automatic betting angle.
Kentucky Beginnings
Romans was born in Louisville in 1966 and grew up around the stable of his father, trainer Jerry Romans. He learned routine backstretch work before taking out his own trainer’s license at 18. Miss Mindy gave him his first victory at Turfway Park on February 15, 1987.
His Kentucky background supplied experience at Churchill Downs, Turfway Park, and Ellis Park. It did not guarantee later national success; that came through decades of results, owner support, staff work, and the development of individual horses.
Kitten’s Joy and Roses in May
Kitten’s Joy became champion turf male in 2004 after a season that included Grade 1 victories in the Secretariat Stakes and Turf Classic Invitational. He finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and later became an influential sire.
Roses in May finished second in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic and won the 2005 Dubai World Cup. Those two horses helped establish Romans as a trainer capable of winning major races on turf and dirt.
Shackleford and the 2011 Preakness
Shackleford gave Romans his first Triple Crown-race victory in the 2011 Preakness Stakes. The colt later won the Metropolitan Handicap and ended his career with the 2012 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs.
A Preakness victory is a permanent achievement, but the phrase “a Romans runner appears in almost every Triple Crown race” is not. Participation varies by season and should be checked from the current entries.
2012 Eclipse Award
Romans received the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Trainer for 2012, not 2013. His 2012 stable included Shackleford, Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Little Mike, and Dullahan, winner of the Pacific Classic and Blue Grass Stakes.
Todd Pletcher received the trainer Eclipse for 2013. The distinction matters because the award year identifies the season being honored. Equibase’s Romans milestone report confirms the 2012 award.
Breeders’ Cup and Travers Wins
Romans won the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with Tapitsfly, the 2011 Mile with Court Vision, and the 2012 Turf with Little Mike. Court Vision’s Mile victory produced a memorable upset over Goldikova, while Little Mike supplied a championship-season success at a different distance.
Keen Ice defeated Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Travers Stakes at Saratoga. The result belongs in a current retrospective because it became one of the stable’s defining later victories.
Other Major Horses
Paddy O’Prado won the Secretariat Stakes and finished third in the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Dullahan won the Blue Grass Stakes and Pacific Classic in 2012. Little Mike added the Arlington Million before his Breeders’ Cup Turf victory, while Tapitsfly later won the Just a Game and First Lady stakes.
Brody’s Cause, Silver Max, Court Vision, and Keen Ice further show that the stable’s major results were distributed across dirt, turf, different distances, and several seasons. A complete profile should not stop with the horses prominent before 2015.
Churchill Downs Record
On November 12, 2017, Romans recorded his 703rd Churchill Downs win and passed Bill Mott to become the track’s all-time leading trainer by victories. The milestone connected his national career to the Louisville track where he grew up.
Dated Career Totals
An older total of 1,731 wins and $84 million no longer describes the active career. A 2025 Equibase report credited Romans with more than 2,250 wins: dated career context. The exact live total should come from Equibase or another official statistics provider and retain its cutoff date.
Current stable size, employee count, and number of states also change. Do not repeat figures such as 100 employees or 150 horses indefinitely unless the profile names the source and year.
Active-Career Status
The career milestones below do not establish a current roster or a permanent schedule. Confirm the trainer of record on today’s official entries, and use dated reporting for assistants, owners and campaign plans rather than extending an old stable description indefinitely.
Do Class Rises Reveal Confidence?
A move from allowance company into a stakes race is observable; the trainer’s private confidence is not. The horse may be entered because of performance, timing, eligibility, ownership preference, available races, or several factors together. Use an attributed statement when connections explain the decision.
To test Romans class rises, define the tracks, dates, prior class, new class, and minimum sample before reviewing results. Record every qualifier, final odds, finish, and equal-unit return. A few memorable winners cannot establish that such moves are rarely speculative or systematically profitable.

The dated Churchill milestone report provides the local record and earlier championship context. A 2017 report should not be used for a 2026 live total. Keep the stable’s racing history, current entries and account questions separate when deciding what a particular statistic can tell you.
Example: winners and betting returns
Ten winners from fifty starts is a 20% strike rate. At $2 per start the sample costs $100; the net result depends on the returns from those ten winners. If they return $90 in total, the sample loses $10 despite the respectable percentage. State both the sample size and complete return before describing any trainer subset as a betting advantage.
