2021 Preakness payouts and stake units

The organizer’s historical chart, on printed page 105, lists the following returns. The numbers below are program numbers in finishing order. Each payout belongs to the stated stake unit; it is not the net profit from every possible ticket built around that result.

For example, a single $2 win bet returned $25.60 including the stake, a $23.60 difference before any other bets or fees. A boxed or part-wheel exotic ticket costs more than one winning combination. Deduct the entire ticket cost, including losing combinations, when calculating the result. A large published payout can therefore coexist with a losing betting session.

Three records to keep separate

The early watch list shows what the author considered before declarations. The final entry list establishes who actually started, while the result chart supplies finishing order, timing and returns. Do not substitute one for another. Concert Tour appearing in the preview, for example, is not a claim that the preview identified the winning combination.

For a useful replay exercise, write one pace prediction before watching, then identify the leaders and the winner at successive points in the race. Record what contradicted the prediction as carefully as what supported it. That approach produces a specific lesson without turning a single past result into a betting rule for the next Preakness.
