Del Mar Thoroughbred Club stages two annual racing seasons beside the Southern California coast. Its 2026 summer meet ran July 17 through September 7, and the Bing Crosby meet is scheduled for November 6 through November 29. The famous “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” setting includes a dirt main track and turf course that require separate analysis.

History and surface change

Del Mar opened in 1937, with Bing Crosby among the public figures associated with its launch. The seaside location and summer social calendar helped establish its identity, while the racing program grew into one of the leading western meets.

The main track used Polytrack from 2007 through 2014. Dirt returned for the 2015 summer meet. Historical times and biases from the synthetic era should therefore be labeled by surface and date rather than combined with modern dirt results.

The Pacific Classic

Dullahan’s 2012 Pacific Classic record came on Polytrack. A time from that race should not be presented as a current dirt benchmark. Course, maintenance, pace, and timing context all matter.

Dirt and turf require separate samples

Del Mar’s dirt main track and turf course differ in geometry, footing, field composition, and the way weather affects racing. A horse’s local record should be split by surface and distance before it is called “horse for the course.”

For turf routes, check the rail placement and run to the first turn. For dirt sprints, compare the amount of early pace and the distance before the bend. Post-position statistics describe what happened in a sample; they do not prove a gate caused the result.

Summer and autumn fields differ

The summer meet attracts horses from across California and visiting championship runners. The shorter Bing Crosby season places more emphasis on late-year turf stakes, juveniles, and horses preparing for or returning from major autumn races. A statistic from July should not automatically be carried into November.

Compare field size, shipper origin, surface use, and class composition for the exact meet. If the sample crosses both seasons, add a meet column so the results can be separated before drawing a conclusion.

A post-position example

Suppose post 1 won four of 12 comparable dirt routes while post 8 won once from four starts. The raw percentages are 33% and 25%, but the samples are small and may contain different odds. Record every starter’s final price and expected pace role before concluding that the rail offered an edge.

2. Record starters and winners for every post.
3. Add average field size, favorite count, and equal-stake return.
4. Separate wet-track or off-turf races.
5. Publish the sample dates and number of starts.
