Chantal Sutherland – Jockey

By Published Updated
Jockey Chantal Sutherland
Chantal Sutherland is a two-time Sovereign Award winner whose career has included major races in Canada, the United States, and Dubai.

Chantal Sutherland built an international riding career through graded-stakes success, two Sovereign Awards, and major milestones with Game On Dude. Her work in television and modeling increased her public profile, but the racing record belongs at the center of her story.

Early Career and Sovereign Awards

Sutherland began riding at Woodbine in 2000. She received Canada’s Sovereign Award as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in both 2001 and 2002. Those were two separate award seasons rather than one undated rookie honor.

She developed into a leading Canadian rider and won stakes at Woodbine on runners including Mine That Bird. Woodbine’s official records show her among the meet’s leading riders in several seasons; individual years and standings should be named rather than converted into unsupported claims of multiple meet titles.

Game On Dude and Major U.S. Wins

Sutherland became the first woman to win the Santa Anita Handicap when Game On Dude took the 2011 running. The partnership also won the Goodwood Stakes and finished second in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

In 2012, she became the first woman to ride in the Dubai World Cup, again aboard Game On Dude. That season also brought a historic Hollywood Gold Cup victory, making her the first woman to win that race.

Television and Public Visibility

Sutherland appeared on Animal Planet’s Jockeys and acted in HBO’s Luck. She also worked in modeling and racing promotion. These activities helped introduce her to audiences outside the racetrack, but they should not be used to evaluate her riding ability or dominate a professional profile.

1,000 Wins and Later Career

In 2017, Sutherland reached 1,000 career victories at Santa Anita. Woodbine described her in 2023 as a winner of nearly 1,250 races and 89 stakes. Because career totals change, every figure should include a date and source.

Her career continued after injuries and periods away from regular U.S. riding. She spent part of 2025–26 riding and galloping horses in Dubai. On May 9, 2026, she won her first race back in the United States aboard Captain Oats at Monmouth Park. Monmouth’s official report documents that return.

Primary Career Sources

Woodbine’s career summary records the two Sovereign Awards, Santa Anita Handicap milestone, and approximate career totals through 2023. Its meet-leader tables provide the year-by-year Woodbine context.

Using an Active Jockey Profile

A rider’s reputation is not an automatic wager. For a current race, examine the horse, likely pace, surface, distance, trainer partnership, starts, prices, and recent circuit results. A booking creates a question about fit and opportunity; it does not reveal private intent.

Milestones Need Dates

Career totals, active circuits, agents, and riding plans change. A useful profile separates permanent achievements from a dated current-status paragraph. Readers should check official entries and results for the meeting rather than assume a rider remains based on the circuit named in an older article.

Judge the Record With Denominators

When comparing jockeys, record mounts, wins, in-the-money finishes, mount quality, prices, and equal-unit returns over a defined period. A high win total can reflect opportunity, while a high percentage can come from a small or favored sample. Neither gender nor public visibility belongs in the calculation.
