Like the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, the Preakness Stakes is part of an entire weekend of horse racing action. You should also consider parking expenses when you choose to attend the Preakness. These are a separate expense and not included in the ticket cost. Preakness Handicapping Principles That Apply Every Year

Preparation, pace, distance and surface deserve attention when comparing a Preakness field. A horse that bypassed the Kentucky Derby may arrive with more recovery time, but skipping the Derby is not proof of either superior fitness or profitable odds. Investigate why the horse followed that route and what its recent form actually shows.

Rombauer’s 2021 victory supplies a historical example of a winner who did not run in that year’s Derby. It does not establish that backing every fresh entrant would have returned a profit. Such a claim would require a defined sample, all qualifying starters, their closing prices and equal-stake returns, including the losers.

Track condition and trip also matter. Wet-track form can be relevant when rain changes the surface, but it should be weighed against distance, pace and price. Do not assume that a post position or a reputation for tight turns produces a fixed advantage. Check the venue and configuration for the edition being studied, then examine the actual field and likely positions.

Rombauer won the May 15 race, with Midnight Bourbon second and Medina Spirit third. The organizer’s post-race report describes Rombauer coming from off the pace to pass the leaders and win by three and a half lengths. His success belongs in the result record alongside the early speculation, so readers can see how the final race differed from the preview.

When reviewing the replay, identify where the eventual winner was during the early pace, when he advanced and how the leaders responded. Then compare that trip with the early watch list above. A name mentioned in April was only a possible entrant; an official starter and an eventual winner are different stages of the story.

Using an Old Preview Without Hindsight

Separate information available before the race from facts learned afterward. First list the runners, odds and conditions known at betting time. Then write down the expected pace and the uncertainty surrounding each selection. Only after recording that view should you consult the result.

The useful question is whether the original reasoning was defensible at the offered price, not whether a losing selection can be made to look foolish after the event. Likewise, a winning result does not validate every reason originally offered for the horse. Historical previews are most valuable when they preserve those distinctions and show what changed between an early forecast, the final declarations and the race itself.
